Even bashing pensions after all these years, with a good basis

Although rarely write more on pensions, over the years, I have a huge file via “colored” section on pensions. “Bunte” is my metaphor for some juicy tracks and brutal, noise, rather how it tore Boulevard newspapers. The message is clear painful: The press loves trashing pensions, year after year.

But what is really striking, as critics increasingly far more hammer blows on the same old problems, indicating that all the bad press, criticism, litigation and Piñata whackings have little influence on changing the annuity industry’s bad behavior.
Indeed, sales have almost doubled in a decade. And as investment News in a special report on insurance products last fall: “The adoption of pensions identifiable on the ground.”

Do not get me wrong, there are really honest annuity companies and brokers outside. Pensions and work for many investors: “We are not the product to condemn” a financial framework in the industry the regulator Securities industry’s self-policing agency, was cited in those terms in Business Week. But: “We have doubts on how they are sold.”
With FINRA, however, there is a vast patchwork of state agencies and insurance regulators markets industry, the number of police work hard.

Indeed, many pensions, hidden defects, which too often is not disclosed to remain until it is too late: the excessive commissions, the decline in yields, late payments, taxes and denial of long - lock-ins. Even Lifetime turnover increase.
As Business Week said: “potential buyers can ignore the sales down and digging in the fine print to determine if an annuity is right for them. But it can be a real SLOG. Some prospectus may be” over 500 pages, so you know why most buyers wind to a set of customers. ”

The vast basic pension is also selling well, it’s simple: the turnover lucrative commissions for the annuity are distribution agents, some times higher than 14%. Accordingly, the industry attracts aggressive hustlers attack on the questionable ethics of vulnerable clients, especially the elderly, a model that the rest of the industry a bad reputation.

Save a Buck! Buy the insurance and separate the securities industry No wonder that journalists and critics are less Ric Edelman as friendly and not so subtle that FINRA at the condemnation of problems with pensions.

“All investment funds of a fee,” said Edelman, a major American financial advisers, “the lies about money.” “But if you plan to invest in an annuity, you pay the fee, as well as pension funds collected by the company. Extras can double or even triple your costs. What a rip-off”.

Resolution: Buy insurance and securities separated. Otherwise, it is recommended that you contact your broker rich and himself broker.

Bashing retirement was Major League sport of independent experts, they were analysed. Here is a montage from my files, over the years, the way things were bad for a long period

Voss, a chance equalization between businesses and consumers with the likely creation of a consumer attorney in his office.

The Iowa Senate and the House have created a position of invoices, whose sole mission is to work for Iowans who believe they have not adequately covered by insurers.

But because the bill contains no additional funds for a lawyer, the position occupied by someone already working for Voss. A spokesman said that the division of staffing, with an internal reorganization within the competence of positions. ”

Voss wanted to control and monitor this position, housing within the Division of Insurance and the legal profession against him.

A consumer-friendly, the bill now awaits the signature of Culver could consider complaints from consumers, the implementation of surveys and administrative hearings against the insurer or the retailer, if any.

The lawyer and all employees would be implemented by the name of Voss and their report. She said that the creation of a stand-alone office would lead to an industry, by two separate entities.

“It causes delays and confusion of consumers and costing more money for network operators, which ultimately on consumers,” she says.

The Division critic, who believe that several core issues in recent history, consumers are not treated fairly. Regarding complaints:

• During 2006, as a remedy against pensions were Iowa-mounting distributors in other countries about their marketing practices, Iowa Insurance Division decided against setting up new guidelines for insurers. Instead, asked the Marketplace Standards Association insurance, industry, trade group of standards for members. The public was not allowed to attend, one of the standards.

State regulatory authorities should not recognize that professional associations, “said Kevin Hennosy, a former official of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

• Dir Chet Culver ordered Voss holding public meetings last summer, it has serious concernsabout News reported that insurers long-term care has been incorrectly price increase and undeniable rights.

Insurance in insurance hearings said that the gripes its insurance division had not participated.

However, the outcome of this meeting was a proposal Voss, asked that his office to implement 27 separate checks, not only in the long term, but also other types of insurance, and their regulation. Not soon after, asked a lawyer consumers began to develop.

• In March 2007, Voss collected a record $ 750000 a sentence of Indianapolis, but insurers publicly rejected the fact that all documents accusations of misconduct.

Dir Culver, and other legislators on the issue and, in April, Voss became clear there is a special meeting of the Senate and House commerce committees.

Voss said she agreed to the transaction in part because they have no authority to unilaterally impose a fine against an insurer. Reagierte the legislature, by granting him that power, and she said that since it wants to exercise the benefit of consumers.

But insurers have the impression that in 2005, Voss was on their side. In a speech at Drake University, has proclaimed itself the biggest supporters that the Iowa’s huge insurance sector. The remark later, Voss was in the context of demand for industry to remain strong and an important part of the economy of Iowa. ”

Since such insurance is a key factor in operation in Iowa, Voss said, he would get the most out of the state and policyholders to ensure that “any activity of industry within a reasonable time and the right of the state. ”

“We are working very closely with industry to ensure that they have the financial capacity to increase productivity and providing products and services for consumers,” said Voss. “We did not have a Multi-State go insolvent company in Iowa in more than 20 years. I think this is a function of good regulation, which are neither heavy nor too soft hands. “

Iowa Health Care for All Coalition: Applauds bipartisan work of Iowa Legislature in passing health reform measures

Today members of the Iowa House and Senate approved a bill that would broadly reform Iowa’s health care system.  Improvements to child coverage outreach will ensure more kids will be covered in Iowa than ever before, and provides the state with a road map to covering all children in Iowa.

“This is a historic bill that is now on its way to the Governor to sign.  While there is much to build upon while we work towards coverage for all Iowans, more kids will be covered in Iowa than ever before, and we as a state will commit the resources to making it happen,” said Charlie Wishman, of Iowa Citizen Action Network.

“This bill creates a path to expanding coverage for adults, addresses the emerging crisis in the supply of health and long term care workers, and shifts the focus from treating people when they are sick to keeping them healthy.  It’s a bill that Iowans can be proud of,” said John Hale of the Iowa Caregivers Association.

“While this health care reform bill focuses on expanding coverage to Iowa’s children, we also applaud new options for expanding adult coverage that will be available soon.  Attention needs to be paid to adults who are unable to afford or who have been refused insurance because of other factors beyond their control.  We’ve got work to do and we’re looking forward to working with legislators on that in the coming session,” said Mary O’Brien of Visiting Nurse Services.

“This is an exciting time for families in Iowa. We are so close to covering all kids with affordable, accessible health care coverage. This bill eliminates red tape and supports working families in securing necessary health services for their children. Our work is not done, we now turn to the task of implementing this legislation and the promises it makes to reach our goal of covering all children by December 31, 2010,” said Carrie Fitzgerald of Child and Family Policy Center.

“This was truly a bi-partisan effort to get this bill passed.  This took both Democrats and Republicans to work through these complex issues, and with the input of stakeholders I think we’ve got a very good bill for the consumers of Iowa,” said Anthony Carroll of AARP.
