UW Law School name African American dean
The University of Washington School of Law has selected the University of Iowa Professor WH “Joe” Knight Jr. In its new dean.
Pending approval by the UW Board of Regents later this month, Knight is the doyen of 13 and the first African American, the 101-year Law School.
Among his first tasks will be more and more minority inclusion in a school heavily on the initiative 200, which prohibits “affirmative action” in the state of recruitment and cinema.
Before I-200-1998 Passage, the Law School accepts 14 Afro-Americans on 61, are applied. Eight students. Two years later, there were 26 black applicants, 57% Drop-Off, and six were accepted, only one registered, “said Associate Dean Richard Kummert.
The Drop-Off for small Hispanics fell from 71 candidates in 1998 to 62 in 2000.
“Clearly, (I-200) had a negative effect, but I think there are several simple ways to begin to turn that around,” said yesterday by telephone from Knight of Iowa. Celles This includes “an effort to recruit more widely, so that contacts with the increase in the number of students and the belief that the (UW) is a pleasant place for them.”
Knight said he would recruit excursions and try to forge closer ties with the black history UAS, a tactic he said, it would have helped Iowa’s Accounting minority.
“My own personal experience as a person of color is that if I Law School, I saw the man seen as me,” said Knight. “I think, with a dean of color is a powerful message to prospective students, it is a place where students can see himself and this is a place where they can succeed. ”
The importance of lawyers
Knight said its goals are improving the national school of visibility and further promote cooperation with other departments campus.
Knight talked about the importance of lawyers in the improvement of Commons.
“I am a very loyal to the 19th century, the ideal lawyering, Oliver Wendell Holmes,” he said. “That’s a great tradition of bourgeois citizens willing to do what is necessary for his or their community.”
Knight, has earned his law degree from Columbia University, was Iowa’s professor at the College of Law since 1988, specializes in commercial law. He also worked on critical theory of race, a territory of the study, which are in the last ten years, to measure the impact of race in the judicial system.
Before entering academics, Knight, he was Associate Counsel and Assistant Secretary for four years with Colonial Bancorp, New Haven and Waterbury, Conn. He is a member of the Board of Directors of State Farm Mutual Auto Insurance.
He has many offers
During his stay in Iowa, Knight was heavily recruited by other universities.
In 1999, he was a finalist for the dean of the University of North Carolina School of Law in Chapel Hill. And he was dean of three positions in the past, including an offer from the University of Seattle in 1995.
The time was not directly on occasions, he said yesterday, says he wanted more time with his family. He has a son aged 15 and a girl of 13 years. His wife, Susan mask, is a lawyer and Adviser to the President of the University of Iowa. It also serves as director of the university affirmative action office.
Knight will replace Roland Hjorth, steps below, in June, after six years as dean. He should be back at the Faculty after a holiday, Kummert said.
Knight’s selection comes just eight days after the Law School Robert Anderson, who was appointed to head its Native American Law Center. Anderson is a leader in the exploration of natural resources, rights, Tribal sovereignty and other issues of Indian law. It was a special adviser to Secretary-General of the former Minister of the Interior Bruce Babbitt.
